When I was about 11 my friend Zoë slammed her pet rat’s head in the car door. She had had the rat for about 2 weeks, and they had developed the unique bond only a small child and terrified rodent can have. This series of works grew out of considering the relationship of dominion and determination between the very young and the small lives they are entrusted with. Its something scary and beautiful and incredibly human: to care for something so much you kill it.
