Luxury Paintings in Green is a series inspired by a body of work I made for The Gallery in Johannesburg about describing George (my conservative hometown) to people who have no concept of it using Flickr hivemind. It has grown over the course of 2020 into a varied collection of paintings, predominantly in green, depicting the moirés of upwardly mobile petit bourgeois society.

Whilst I use the category “green” rather loosely, all these works have the velvety texture of a billiard table: a rich covering hiding cheap knotty pine. In the frenetic marks and gestural figuration I hope to convey a sense of aesthetic beauty coupled with a blissfully vapid ego death- keeping up with the joneses as Jungian analysis.
