Have you ever read (well looked at) a Laura Ashley decorating guide from the nadir of floral polycotton (about 1981). It’s like the creative team was independently theorizing The Yellow Wallpaper. Growing up in South Africa ten years later many of the homes I graced as a toddler clung on to this watered down claustrophobia. As these sinister spaces become evermore a rarity I want to consider how they contain a void: the political liminality of the white lower middle class in the mid nineties.
